VICTORIANS

Note - not dollshouse size

The time of Queen Victoria saw many dramatic changes of fashion for ladies as it became their role to display the prosperity of their household, in contrast to men's wear which became increasingly sober and restrained.

1832 in the reign of William IV  (I know it says Victorians, but this pair are in-between and they go better here than elsewhere)

The Lady in Outdoor Dress has returned to a classic hourglass figure. Sleeves have ballooned out and bonnets grown to match. Her dress is a rich navy blue velvet.

The Gentleman wears a frock coat, peg-top trousers and stovepipe hat.

1845 in the reign of Victoria, Winter Costumes

The Lady wears a sleeved, fitted cape over her full skirted dress, with a typical poke-bonnet and has her left hand inside a muff.

The Gentleman has another variation on the cape and carries a carol sheet, which is why they are in winter costume.

1855 in the reign of Victoria

The Lady in Ball Dress wears a crinoline with flounces of lace and low neckline.     (Also available in dolls house size - see Victoria)

The Gentleman in Evening Dress wears the obligatory black tailcoat and trousers      (Also available in dolls house size - see Albert)

The Boy has a tunic blouse with Eton collar and baker-boy cap on his head.   (Still available in dolls house size - see Andrew)

1863 in the reign of Victoria

The Lady in Outdoor Dress has a crinoline that is flatter at the front, but bigger at the back. Her bonnet has lost its brim leaving just the crown section and trimmings.      (Also available in dolls house size - see 1860's lady)

The Gentleman in Outdoor Dress has a loose fitting jacket and trousers with very loud checks.

1870 in the reign of Victoria

The Lady in Outdoor Dress now has a bustle under her skirts which are tied back with a giant sized bow.      (Also available  in dolls house size - see Sarah)

The Gentleman wears a frock coat, fancy waistcoat and short, squashed top hat. Do notice his 'Dundreary' whiskers.     (Also available in dolls house size - see Bernard)

1880 in the reign of Victoria

The Lady in Evening Dress has lost her bustle, so her skirts are pulled in tightly down to the knee where they end in a wonderful fish-tail sweep.

The Gentleman wears a three-piece suit for the first time, which has been with us ever since.

1885 in the reign of Victoria

The Gentleman wears a type of coat known as the 'covert' and his brand new bowler hat makes him look very dapper.

The Lady in Outdoor Dress wears the revived bustle, said to be so big that you could balance a tea tray on it!

1895 in the reign of Victoria

The Lady wears a suit with leg of mutton sleeves, tiny waist and gored skirt. Her hat is worn square on the head with a face veil.   (Also available in dolls house size - see Helen)

The Gentleman wears a Norfolk jacket, knee breeches and deer stalker hat that makes him look a bit like Sherlock Holmes.
